Seven land runs in all took place in Oklahoma, beginning with the initial and most infamous on April 22nd, 1889 which gave rise to the terms 89’er and Sooner. I was forced to celebrate this semi hostile takeover of all remaining native lands in OK growing up. We dressed up as pioneers, hopped in covered red wagons and drove around the school yard like imbeciles for 30 minutes then ate cupcakes or fruit roll ups or whatever sugary artificial concoction was packed in our lunch box. I am happy to say I haven’t participated in this annual Okie celebration since 1989. The timing feels right however to welcome 6 killer and rare drafts from my home state on a date that has absolutely nothing in common with its origins. Take that native land take overers!
