Full event description below from Blind Tiger.

I really enjoy watching my friends’ careers as they evolve. It’s especially fun when they happen to be one of the best brewers on the planet. I’m talking about Jeff (Chief) O’Neil, head brewer at Peekskill. I first learned of Chief when his Flower Power IPA, which he created at Ithaca Beer in upstate New York, began exploding in people’s mouths all over town. He also tarted us up with some of the best barrel-aged sours, before they became all the rage. So it was big news when Chief opted to leave Ithaca to take over the helm at Peekskill. He said it was time to “play some small ball,” claiming local breweries would be the funnest place to be as craft beer continued to take over the world. He seemed to enjoy taking a bite out of the Big Apple’s bar and restaurant scene as he showed us what he could do in a much less structured setting.

Of course there’s nothing more fun than opening your own brewery (which probably explains why there are about 3,000 new breweries in planning), so it should be no surprise that Chief is finally taking that fork in the road. He’s leaving Peekskill to begin working on his own project in the Hudson Valley. In fact, his event at the Tiger Weds., March 11th, beginning at 3pm, which he’s calling “Smell Ya Later,” will be his final notes from Peekskill. Though I’m sorry he didn’t build his brewery on my farm in Vermont, I’m happy the City, and the Blind Tiger, will remain his chief stomping grounds. He’s hoping to be up and running at his new location a year from now, so I suggest you smell as much of his beer as you can this week, to tide you over.

Chief is leaving Peekskill in the capable hands of Matt Levy. It’s funny – when Katherine and I went up to brew at Captain Lawrence last spring, people at the brewery were talking about this young gun they had in their midst. We tasted a Saison he had made on their pilot system, and it was pretty damn good. Scott and Keith were trying to keep Matt’s head from swelling too much, but it was clear he had the talent. The next thing I knew, Matt was Chief’s assistant at Peekskill. And now, I’m congratulating him on moving up to head brewer, and filling some of the biggest rubber boots on this side of the Atlantic. Talk about a meteoric rise! Well, if anyone can handle following up a famous redhead, it’s probably Matt – he has that preternatural calm of a guy who doesn’t worry about too much.

So please join us at the Tiger on Wednesday as we raise a glass to the future, and drink to the present…

-Dave
