St. Gambrinus couldn’t resist meeting St. Jordi and celebrating his Feast Day Sunday, April 26th! St. Jordi is Catalan version of Valentine’s day and is a festival of romance, roses and books all inspired by the medieval legend of Saint George (Jordi) on 23rd April every year (we’re celebrating a few days late!). St. Jordi is also the patron saint of Catalonia. We’ll be celebrating with our favorite Catalan Beers and cheeses, and a great playlist of Flamenco music! We’ll also be honoring the tradition of giving a book to a loved one by offering a book-exchange! We’ll have a bunch of used books. If you want to bring any books to exchange that can be a fun bonus of the night!
We’ll have on tap these limited very special beers from the Catalan region of Spain:
The legend of Saint George is that Saint Jordi slew a dragon to save a princess – and then plucked a red rose for the princess from a rose bush, which had sprouted on the exact spot, where the dragon’s red blood had spilled. Since then, it has been the custom in Catalonia to present a rose to your loved one. In Barcelona, the festival has street venders with flowers and books. This same day happens to also be the anniversary of the deaths of Shakespeare and Cervantes which is how the book giving tradition began.
St. Gambrinus on the other hand, made a pact with the devil to help him forget his unrequited love. Show St. Gambrinus some love this St. Jordi day…he’ll be busy drinking his favorite Catalan beers!
