Sad news for homebrewers in New York: Brooklyn Homebrew announced yesterday that they will be closing at the end of the month. The store has been open since 2009 in three different storefronts throughout the borough, including the owners’ living room.
Owners Danielle and Benjamin sent out an email with a formal announcement, citing the rising costs of doing business in NYC as the main reason for their closure.
The news comes close on the heels of Bierkraft’s sudden closure last month. Their full announcement is below:
When we founded Brooklyn Homebrew in early 2009 our only goals were to provide ourselves and the rest of NYC with a local source for quality brewing supplies. It has been quite a ride for us. We started simply with only a few hundred bucks in our pocket, a big idea and a small living room in Sunset Park. From that we built something pretty cool and have learned an unbelievable amount about business and beer along the way. We set a the standard for home-brew stores in our area as others soon followed in our footsteps. We have met a lot of amazing people and have made some great friends throughout the years. The beer scene in NYC has exploded in the last 6 years and we’ve watched a myriad of awesome breweries open, many of them by brewers who were our customers along the way. We hope that we have played some small part in feeding the fire of the NYC craft beer scene that now surrounds us.
While our love of beer has only grown stronger throughout the years, the daily grind of running a retail operation has lost its charm. Paired with the rising cost of doing business in NYC, many days provide more challenges than pleasures. We sincerely hoped we could pass the torch to a new owner to carry on where we’ve left off, but in the end we were not able to make a deal. For these reasons it is with a heavy heart that we must announce that our beloved Brooklyn Homebrew will be closing its doors at the end of July.
While we’ll miss the store, we are super excited for the future and the chance to take our knowledge and experience on to the next project, whatever that may be. Don’t worry, you’ll still see us at local beer bars, meetings, and events. We will announce our final day of operation in a few weeks. For now business will continue to operate as usual throughout the month and classes will run as scheduled. We encourage you all to still come by to shop, have a beer, and say hello.
We owe all of our customers and allies a huge thank you for the support and kindness throughout the years. We hope to see you all for a beer soon.
Remember, It’s better to burn out than to fade away.
Danielle & Benjamin
