Other Half Brewing Co. has another can release at the brewery this weekend. In addition to the 16-ounce cans of Green Diamonds DIPA that are often available, Other Half will be introducing a new format: 12-ounce cans.
Other Half Doug will be the first beer to be released in the new, smaller canned format. Doug is a Cascadian Dark Ale (also known as a Black IPA, India Black Ale, or, more recently, American-Style Black Ale by the Brewers Association), and clocks in at 7.2% ABV. Based on the Other Half’s previous output of well-balanced, hop-forward beers, we’re expecting Doug to be an excellent release.
From Other Half:
[Doug is] a 7.2% abv Cascadian Dark Ale that pays homage to our brewmaster, Sam Richardson’s home state of Oregon.
The Brewers Association defines American-Style Black Ale as follows:
American-Style Black Ales are very dark to black. Medium caramel malt and dark roasted malt aromas are evident. Hop aroma is medium-high to high, with fruity, floral, herbal or other hop aroma from hops of all origins contributing. Medium caramel malt and dark roasted malt flavors are evident. High astringency and high degree of burnt roast malt should be absent. Hop flavor is medium-high, with fruity, floral, herbal or other hop flavor from hops of all origins contributing. Hop bitterness is medium-high to high. Body is medium.
The 12-ounce format marks a departure from Other Half’s usual 16-ounce can offerings. Although not clear, the new format might be an effort to offer their beer at a more competitive price point (cases of Doug will be sold for $70, whereas their 16-ounce cases typically carry a price tag of $90).
Other Half Doug and Green Diamonds will be available in cans at the brewery this Saturday (October 10). Full release details are here.
